Caretaker manager Jon Brady has revealed the goalkeeping 'problem' facing the Cobblers after he was critical of Jonathan Mitchell's error-strewn display during Saturday's defeat to Swindon Town.

The Derby County loanee has started all five games under Brady and was publicly backed by Town's caretaker boss last week but endured a difficult afternoon at the County Ground.

His positioning came under fire after failing to get a strong enough glove to Scott Twine's free-kick before he was caught in no man's land when Brett Pitman nodded in the winning goal.

"I feel Mitch can do a lot better with it (the first goal), in my opinion," said Brady.

"For the second, Mitch is too far out of his goal, the ball goes down the right hand side of the pitch and it's a routine save that he should make - he should be catching the ball.

"But he's caught too high when the ball goes down the side and it goes into the box for a header and it was just a tame header that he shouldn't be scrambling for. He should be catching it and taking it into his body, it shouldn't be a problem."

Brady could be tempted into recalling Steve Arnold to the team when Cobblers host Plymouth Argyle on Tuesday, however it's not quite that straightforward.

He revealed: "We've been looking after Arnie for the past three or four weeks because he has a real bad back problem. He's taken injections for it and he hasn't trained.

"I believe in Mitch and I also believe in Arnie but I'll be totally honest, if we want to make a change, we've got a bit of a problem because we have a goalkeeper who hasn't trained for three or four weeks.

"But that goalkeeper puts himself out there and puts himself onto the bench ready to go at any time. I've got to let the dust settle on it."
