Caretaker manager Jon Brady would be keen on taking charge of the Cobblers at Ipswich Town this week, but he remains reluctant to commit himself to the job in the long-term.

Brady oversaw his first game as temporary boss on Saturday when struggling Town were beaten 2-0 at home by bottom of the table Burton Albion.

But despite a seventh successive league game without victory, Brady saw some encouraging signs and believes he can continue that improvement at Portman Road on Tuesday.

However, he would also understand if chairman Kelvin Thomas made an an appointment in the meantime.

"I would like to have the opportunity to carry on and do it on Tuesday at Ipswich," said Brady. "But I think it would be completely selfish of me to say that I want the job.

"It's not about Jon Brady or any individual. It's about the club moving forward and maintaining our status in League One.

"Yes, I believe I can help to improve these players and get results but it's not about me. I love the fact that Northampton are a League One club now and if the chairman and James (Whiting) feel there's someone else who can take this club forward and who, in their opinion, is better equipped than me, I'm all for it.

"I believe right now, in this moment, I know these players inside and out whereas a new person coming in would have to get to know them and that might take a little bit of time.

"I believe I've had a real positive reaction with the way we've started to train and now I feel there are signs that it's been different to what was delivered in the last month or so."
