Boss Wilder proud of 'special' record-breaking Cobblers

Danny Rose scored the only goal of the game as the Cobblers moved 10 points clear at the top of League Two with an incredible 14th win in the past 15 league matches.

“I’m proud of the players – they’re a special group,” said Wilder afterwards.

“We knew today was possibly the biggest challenge. With Gareth (Ainsworth) and his team, they always go to the end and I have loads of respect for the guy and his team.

“They really pushed us hard and we’ve had to work exceptionally hard to get the three points but it’s a fantastic three points.

“We had a little dig a little deep because we lacked a little bit of energy which you can understand in terms of the games we’ve had to play.

“We said a few words at half-time and we got ourselves going again and I thought second half we scored a great goal and managed to get three points and it’s a massive, massive three points for us.

“It’s a great feeling for everybody and so it should be.”

The win over Wycombe, achieved without the presence of captain Marc Richards, caps off a remarkable week for Wilder’s men who beat Leyton Orient 4-0 last weekend and then overcame Oxford United 1-0 on Tuesday.

“I think people looked at the fixtures we had this week with Leyton Orient and Oxford away and then Wycombe and we’ve answered them and gone win, win, win,” added Wilder.

“We’ve had to work hard for all three wins but we can be really proud of where we’re going and what we’ve done this week and what we’ve done all season.

“We lost the skipper before kick-off after he failed a fitness test. We’ll have him scanned next week so that was a big blow to us even though we’ve got quality coming in behind him.

“Wycombe give it their all and that was a tough game today but our players yet again, whatever opposition is put in front of us and whatever challenge we have to overcome, they overcome it.

“To be in this position at this stage of the season is a fantastic achievement and I’m sure there’s quite a few teams below us who’d like to swap players.
