Cobblers club captain Nicky Adams says he and his team-mates are 'super excited' to take a crack at promotion if and when the League Two play-offs take place.

It was feared that all of Cobblers' hard work would go to waste ahead of a crunch conference call between the 24 League Two clubs last Friday when clubs voted on how to finish the season.

But although it was agreed to end the regular campaign, it was also deicded that the table will be decided on a points-per-game basis and the top three will win promotion while the next four sides compete in the play-offs.

If that is made official, Cobblers will face Cheltenham and have a one-in-four shot at promotion.

“I think it’s come as a welcome boost, especially for us as players, because it’s been a difficult time for everyone,” said Adams.

“People’s health and safety obviously comes first but I think we’re starting to come out the other side and with all the uncertainty over the last couple of months, it’s just good to have a bit of positivity.

“It’ll be strange, especially with no fans in the ground, but we know they’ll be watching on the television and supporting us from home.

“The boys are buzzing. We’ve been speaking a lot over the last few days and we’re all just super excited at the possibility of being in the play-offs because there’s nothing better than the feeling of winning promotion and we’ve now got an opportunity to do that – let’s try and take it.”

Adams believes it was the right decision to reward teams at the top of the table. Swindon, Crewe and Plymouth are set to go up automatically while Exeter, Colchester, Cheltenham and Northampton will battle it out for the final promotion place.

“Ideally we’d all like to finish the season but we put ourselves in a fantastic position to be in the play-offs at the time of the suspension," added Adams.

“The top three were voted to go up and rightly so because they’re up there for a reason and if you can’t play the remaining games, I think you should reward success so fair play to them.

“They were on the right side of the line and they deserve to go up but I also think the teams below, who have also worked hard to be in a good position, deserve the chance to finish what they started.

"We still need to get some more clarity but all the lads are buzzing and we can’t wait. Hopefully we can crack on with it soon. I'm really excited."
