Nicky Adams will always hold Northampton 'in the highest regard' after taking the 'very tough decision' to leave the club for a second time.

The winger turned wing-back has made 16 appearances in all competitions this season but his move back up north has not come about purely for football reasons.

Now 34, Adams wants to play out the final few years of his career closer to his family in Greater Manchester and that was the major factor behind his decision to sign an 18-month deal with Oldham Athletic.

But it took a lot of agonising to leave a club where he has spent some of the best years of his career, including two promotion wins.

"Everyone knows how I much I think of the club," he said. "I hold it very dear to my heart and this was a very tough decision for me to make. I just felt at that this stage of my career, it was the right thing for me and my family.

"I have been away from my family for a long time and this will bring me closer to them at the right time.

"I have been superbly treated by everyone at Northampton Town and I can't thank the club enough. I must thank the chairman, Keith of course who I have a very special relationship with, all of the staff, my team mates and the supporters.

"Whether it be last season or this season, the club have always done the right thing by the players and have looked after us superbly through the pandemic and that is something I will never forget.

"We created some great memories together that I will never forget and although it was a tough decision to leave, it is the right decision at the right time for all of us.

"I will always hold the club and the people at the club in the highest regard."
