Champions-elect Cobblers freeze season ticket prices

Chairman Kelvin Thomas says the '˜special connection' generated between the Cobblers supporters and players over the past six months is the reason behind the club's decision to freeze season-ticket prices for next season.

An incredible campaign at Sixfields is set to end with Chris Wilder’s men claiming promotion from Sky Bet League Two, something that could even be confirmed with a win in this Saturday’s home date with Notts County.

The Cobblers also only need a couple more wins to seal the league two title, the first time a Town team will have won a division since Graham Carr’s class of 1987.

But it is only a little over four months ago that the club stood on the very brink of extinction due to an unpaid tax bill, and with the debt of an unpaid £10.25m loan from the Borough Council hanging around its neck.

That was the time when the club’s supporters came into their own, rallying behind the players, management and staff at the club, raising funds and showing exactly what Northampton Town means to them.

It was a reaction that didn’t go unnoticed by the new chairman Thomas, who along with his associates came to rescue and took over the club from David Cardoza at the end of November.

The support of the fans home and away has been superb all season, and Thomas feels that loyalty and passion deserves to be rewarded.

That means season tickets, if purchased by May 31, will cost exactly the same as they did last season, even if - as expected - the Cobblers move up a division.

Indeed, the freeze means season-ticket prices are the same as they were five years ago.

“We have enjoyed a fantastic season and the levels of interest and excitement in the club are extremely high,” said Thomas.

“Since we arrived at the club in late November, we have been delighted with the levels of support and the loyalty and passion shown by supporters.

“We are keen to reward that loyalty, so we are delighted to offer supporters who buy a season ticket before the end of May the chance to (hopefully!) watch league one football at the same prices they were paying for league two football.

“We are not sure that there have been many examples of teams moving up a division (hopefully) and freezing season ticket prices, but this club has enjoyed a special season and there has been a special connection created between supporters and players, and we wanted to build on that.

“While price is clearly important, we shared the pain of those supporters who were unable to get tickets for some games last season because we were sold out, but by buying a season ticket they remove any such worries and with some big games certain to be on the schedule in 2016/17, that could be a very shrewd move.”

A club statement read: “Northampton Town are delighted to announce details of 2016/17 season ticket packages, with prices frozen, whatever division the club are playing in, if season tickets are purchased on or before 31 May, 2016.

“This means season ticket holders who purchase before the end of May will pay the same price they were paying for league two football five years ago.

“The club pledge not to increase the prices stated if we are promoted to league one.

“An adult season ticket is available in the north stand for just under £11 per game ahead of the May 31 discount deadline, while season-ticket holders will again have priority over non-season-ticket holders for cup and away matches.

“The discount period has been pushed back to the end of May while supporters can once again pay for their season ticket in instalments via Zebra Finance, and 2016/17 season ticket holders purchasing before May 31 will make even more of a saving than in previous years, with season tickets purchased after May 31 subject to a small increase on 2015/16 levels.

“Emails and letters are being sent out this week to current season ticket holders.”

The deal means an adult season ticket for the west and east stands can be bought before May 31 for £380, with the price rising to £430 from June 1. There is also an ‘executive seating’ option in the west stand, which costs £525.

An adult season for the north stand is £249 up to May 31, going up to £370 from June 1.
