Chantelle Cameron and her team celebrate after she claimed the world title on Sunday night

PICTURE SPECIAL: Northampton boxer Chantelle Cameron is a world champion!

It has taken many years, but Northampton finally has a boxing world champion - and it is Chantelle Cameron.

The 29-year-old turned in a 'punch perfect' performance to see off Brazil's Adriana Araujo on points in Milton Keynes on Sunday night.

The victory saw Cameron claim the vacant WBC super-lightweight title, with the fight shown live on Sky Sports.

It was a fantastic moment for the Northampton fighter, who has strived and worked towards this moment since she started fighting as an amateur with the Kings Heath club.

Her crowning moment comes six years after she nearly walked away from the sport altogether after narrowly failing to win a place on the Great Britain team for the Rio Olympics.

Cameron was delighted to claim the title, and said: "I can't even put it into words - I'm just emotional, it's unreal.

"I was a nervous wreck but my team know how to keep me calm, they know how to make me have fun. They are the perfect team.

"I wanted this belt - and I just had to keep my head on it.

"I just want to say thanks to everyone who has backed me - it means the world to me."

Cameron will now relax and enjoy her monumental victory, but admits she wants to be back in the ring as soon as she can.

"I would love to be back out before the end of the year, but my team will tell me what I am doing next," she said.
