Northampton's Chantelle Cameron claims 'best win' to become three-belt world champion

Northampton boxer Chantelle Cameron turned in a stunning performance to beat American Mikaela Mayer in Birmingham on Saturday night to add two more world title belts to her collection.

Cameron claimed a unanimous points verdict in the super welterweight contest, and now adds the WBC and WBA titles to the WBO crown she already held.

The crowd at the bp pulse LIVE Arena were treated to an all-action fight with plenty of edge, after the two fighters clashed with a head-to-head tussle at the weigh-in on Friday.

A fired-up Cameron was on the attack from the first bell to the last, and although Mayer tried to give as good as she got after a shaky start, all three judges awarded the win to former Kings Heath amateur Cameron.

Prior to the fight, the town ace had said she was going deliver her 'best performance', and she felt she did just that - even going as far as to say the win 'topped' beating Katie Taylor to become undisputed world champion in 2023.

Asked where it ranked compared to the win over the Irish superstar, Cameron told Sky Sports: "I think it topped it, because I shut her (Mayer) up.

"Any time that happens, where you really do humble someone, I think that is the icing on the cake."

She later added in the post-fight press conference: "I think that was probably one of my best performances.

"I heard my team shouting early on that Mikaela didn't want to be in there, and I was feeling that off her.

"I do think she then started coming on in the rounds near the end, but I could feel she didn't want to be in there.

"She knew she was in with the wrong girl, that I was going to outclass her all night and beat her up, and I did that.

"I am going to say this is my best win, I really enjoyed it."

In the weeks and months ahead of the fight, the relationship between Cameron and Mayer was a friendly one, full of respect.

But that is now definitely not the case, with the two fights swapping verbal and physical jibes before the contest, and then having another argument in the ring after the fight.

"I feel great, but I obviously got cut because I got a bit stupid," Cameron told Sky Sports.

"With all the build-up, she was trying to do stuff in the ring before the fight, but she is just insecure and talks so much rubbish.

"To be fair, I learned a lesson there and that is don't start messing about and switching off, and trying to wind somebody up because you get cut, and that was a bit stupid of me."

On the pre-fight needle and that clash at the weigh-in, Cameron said that is something Mayer probably no regrets, as she feels she 'messed up'.

"I didn't want that. Before all of this I really did have so much respect for Mikaela," said Cameron..

"From the amateur days when we were both boxing, she was for America and me GB, so I had a lot of respect for her.

"But she just got in my face ramming her head in and started saying I was saying stuff, but my lips didn't move.

"I think she really messed up doing that.

"She was saying she was going to knock me out, she is going to beat me so badly, and that was at the back of my head.

"But the last straw was the weigh-in and it just switched for me, so I am glad she did that."

The fight was broadcast live on Sky Sports, and takes Cameron's record as a professional to 23 wins and just one defeat.
