Northampton boxer Kieron Conway forced to call off Mark Jeffers showdown

Kieron Conway's big fight with Mark Jeffers in Wolverhampton on Saturday has been called off.

The Northampton boxer was aiming to get back to winning ways following his British title defeat to George Liddard in October with a super-middleweight contest over 10 rounds at at the Civic Hall.

But the Team Shoe-Box fighter has been forced to cancel the bout due to illness.

In the past, Conway has fought through the pain barrier on several occasions, but this time he and his team have decided it is better to err on the side of caution.

Writing on social media, Conway said: "I am unfortunately announcing that my fight, scheduled for May 2, has had to be cancelled.

"This was a decision that the team and I mad as I had an illness and missed too much training at a vital part of camp.

"I have made the mistake of not doing the right thing in similar situations many times over during my career.

"With it being my 30th birthday on the fight day, I thought I am finally old enough to learn from past mistakes and make the tough decisions.

"Ticket refunds are being made, and I can only apologise for any inconvenience caused."

The fight against Jeffers was due to be on the undercard of the clash between Conah Walker and Sam Eggington and would have been a tricky one for Conway, with the Northern Irishman having won his first 20 professional bouts, before losing in his two most recent outings.

Conway suffered only the fourth defeat of his 28-fight professional career when losing last time out in his British and Commonwealth title fight with the unbeaten Liddard at Bethnal Green.
