Northampton boxer Cameron aiming to stay on top of the world in Glasgow

The Northampton boxer will face France’s Myriam Dellal in her maiden world title defence in Glasgow on Saturday.

Cameron will be featuring as part of the supporting cast to Josh Taylor’s duel with Mexican Humberto Soto at the SSE Hydro.

The full card is to be televised across Channel 5 and 5Spike respectively on free to air television within the UK.

And for Cameron, who claimed the IBO title by beating Switzerland’s Viviane Obenauf in Leicester in December, it is the first fight in a year that she believes will bring more glory.

“I’m really looking forward to my next fight and aiming to make 2018 even better than last year with better performances,” Cameron said.

“This is the first step as it’s my first fight of the year.

“I’m fully focused on this fight as I need this win to kick-start a good year. I’m fully prepared - my team have made sure of that.”

Cameron trains at Far Cotton ABC with head coach John Daly, as well as with Shane McGuigan at the McGuigan Gym in London.

And she has been revelling in preparations for her bout against Dellal.

“Training has been going great under the guidance of Shane McGuigan,” Cameron said.

“I have a great team behind me at Cyclone Promotions and I feel they are bringing the best out of me.”

Cameron has enjoyed a rapid rise through the ranks since turning professional in May of last year, claiming five victories, with four of those stoppages.

She has cemented herself as one of the most dangerous female lightweights in the professional arena.

Combined with an excellent amateur pedigree, which saw her represent Great Britain, Cameron is certainly making herself a must-watch attraction within the UK.

And she has lofty ambitions for the months to come.

“My 2018 targets are to target the WBO world title and gain two titles in the lightweight division to give me a better opportunity to go for unification,” Cameron said.

Dellal holds a record of 15 wins, seven defeats with three draws and is a former French national champion at lightweight.

She previously held the WBC international lightweight title and the WBC’s silver super-lightweight title.

Dellal is also a two-time EBU (European) title challenger along with challenging for world titles in her previous two contests.

The 39-year-old is a familiar foe of female pound-for-pound ranked Delfine Persoon of Belgium (WBC lightweight world champion) and French rival Maiva Hamadouche (IBF super-featherweight world champion).

Cameron knows she faces a tough test against Dellal this weekend but is fully confident she can claim her sixth successive win.

“I know she hasn’t been stopped,” Cameron said.

“She has boxed for world titles before and gave the pound-for-pound best in the division a great fight.

“She will be tough and experienced but I am more than confident I will have the tools to beat her.”
