Kieron Conway may have spent the past eight months working solidly in the gym, but he is already desperate to get back to work and start preparing for his next fight.

And the Northampton boxer has his sights set on what would be a blockbuster all-British bout next up, against either Ted Cheeseman or Sam Eggington.

Conway is still on a high after claiming his first title as a professional on Friday night, sealing a unanimous points decision win over Nav Mansouri to claim the WBA Inter-Continental Super Welterweight belt

The bout was part of the latest Matchroom Boxing Fight Nights, which are being staged behind closed doors in the garden of Eddie Hearn’s Brentwood mansion.

Conway took his chance to impress in front of the Sky Sports cameras, securing his 15th win in 17 professional fights.

He is keen to make the most of the momentum he is building, and wants to be back in the ring before the end of the year, and a re-match against Cheeseman, the pair drawing their British title fight last summer, or a showdown with Eggington will fit the bill.

That pair did battle in the opening Fight Night on August 1, with Cheeseman winning on points to land the IBF international title, and Conway said: “I now have a title to show for my work, and there should be a big fight next.

“I would like to face Eggington or Cheeseman, and either of those would do me nicely.

“I am happy with that, and I think those fights would be the right step to go.”

On the timescale for that fight, Conway said: “Hopefully we will be back and fighting again before the end of the year.

"I know that this week or next week, Matchroom are putting together their next batch of shows, so hopefully I will be on one of them.

“I will be really keen to get out there again, whether it’s sooner or later in the year.”

Conway is set to enjoy a few days off, but he says he ‘cant wait’ to get back training again.

“I know for my body’s sake that I have to have a couple of weeks off, which I am going to do,” he said.

“I have not been back in the gym yet, and I won’t for another couple of weeks or whatever, and then I will get back round to the start of the phases again.

“I can’t wait to get back into it, because I don’t know what to do with myself. I need to go and train.

“It’s not like I have a job to go to, this is my job, and it is like having a holiday from work and there is nothing to do. I don’t like it!”

Conway was excellent in seeing off the experienced Mansouri on Friday, overpowering and outclassing his opponent, and he was delighted.

“I was happy with how it all went, and everything kind of went to plan, and how I expected it to,” said the 24-year-old.

“I thought he would come out fast, because he knew I was a bigger fighter than him.

“I am big for the weight and when people get in with me they realise the size, and they have to adapt instantly, so I knew he would come out quickly.

“That is what happens when you know you are in the deep end, they come out quick, try and rush their work and rack some points up.

“I knew he would do that, and I knew he wouldn’t last after three or four rounds, and everything went to plan apart from the fact he lasted 10 rounds. I expected it to be seven or eight.”

The fact that Mansouri did last the full 10 rounds is the only frustration for Conway, who was desperate to secure the first stoppage of his professional career.

He very nearly did that as Mansouri reeled under a blistering barrage in the seventh round, but he survived to the bell, and then used all of his self preservation experience to see out the rest of the fight.

So was not finishing it early a frustration for Conway?

“It is a bit frustrating, because some people are still saying that I don’t punch and can’t see the weight of the shots that are going in,” said the Northampton fighter.

“So I wanted to stop people being able to say that, and it would have been nice to get the stoppage, but it is what it is and we have to move on.

“After the seventh, he made it difficult by getting on the bike, slipping and sliding and not really getting involved.

“If we got too close then he would just smother the work, get close and hold, which showed his experience.”
