BOXING: Kings Heath start new year in style

Some exciting new talent is emerging from the gym and that was shown last weekend.

Stylish Lewis Fuller set the tone at the Westone Hotel in Corby, producing a classy display as he outpointed Aaron Mayer (Hulton Abbey).

Fuller put together some eye-catching combinations as he wore down his game opponent, forcing a standing count in the second round.

And a dominant third round performance sealed a fine win.

Felix Fitzharris was making his first appearance for the club and he showed no signs of nerves in his bout against Ellham Rowley (Bolsover).

Fitzharris pushed on from the opening bell with two-handed attacks.

The continued pressure forced the referee to stop the bout halfway through the second round, in favour of the Kings Heath lad.

Welterweight Lewis Bee was pushed all the way in a crowd-pleasing encounter against Samuel Wragg (Bolsover).

But a fine variety of shots throughout the contest swung the verdict in Bee’s favour against a rugged and tough opponent who made him work hard throughout.

Commonwealth Games champion Eithan James was also in action, engaging in his first bout for five months.

Boxing at a new weight, James showed all the attributes that have seen him claim many national honours as he outclassed the highly experienced Samuel Wragg.

Over three three-minute rounds, James was accurate as well as eye catching, producing a performance that was equally mature and very pleasing.

James now boxes in the 60kg midland final of the Youth Championships this weekend.

He will be up against Jimmy Connors for a place in the last eight of the national competition, where he could join exciting female boxer Simmy Kaur in the showcase finals next month.

“We are pleased with continual progress of our boxers,” said Kings Heath head coach Arthur Daly.

“The gym can be a tough and demanding environment, but it is satisfying for everyone when our team produce in the manner that they did last weekend.”

Northampton middleweight Kieron Conway is ready to continue to prove people wrong.

The talented 21-year-old has won all five of his pro fights to date.

His most recent win came via TKO against Casey Blair at the Brentwood Centre in Brentwood on December 2.

And he recently took to social networking site Twitter to stress he belief that he can be the best, showing those who doubted him that he means business in the years to come.

“I remember a lot of my school teachers and probably most of the people in the school all thought I was stupid/unrealistic and used to laugh at me when I used to say I’d be world champ pro boxer... I’m going to prove that i meant it!! #TooClass,” 
wrote Conway, who is a product of the Kings Heath ABC gym.

Conway, who has recently been sparring at the MTK gym in Liverpool, is next in action on February 3 as he takes to the canvas at Birmingham’s Holiday Inn.

The Northampton fighter, sponsored by S&D PAVING Northampton, will be topping the bill alongside Solihull’s homegrown talent Mitch Redmond.
