A smart OBD scanner claiming a huge 90% discount has dropped to £9.99, giving drivers a low-cost way to diagnose faults without pricey garage scans

Diagnosing car faults yourself might sound like a dark art, but OBD scanners are widely available now, and they could save you a hefty garage bill.

Main dealers can charge more than £100 to read the faults stored in your car's ECU (its electronic brain) and even independents can charge around £40.

By reading and clearing the code yourself, you skip that part of the process. And more often than not, you'll probably find it's just a dirty sensor or something.

You might even find that clearing the code makes it go away, and if it comes straight back, that's when you need to call for professional help.

OBD scanners have plummeted in price over recent years, but the smart scanners that link up to smartphone apps that intelligently talk you through the issues it's found are still stubbornly pricey.

We were quite surprised to find this one on Amazon, though, which has a "90% discount". It's priced at £9.99, which is a bargain for a smart scanner.

We have checked the price history, and we can't find any record of it costing the supposed £99.99 RRP, but it's a clever bit of kit.

It has the latest Bluetooth 5.4, an advanced processor, it comes with a "warning light encyclopaedia" and - here's the best bit - there are no subscriptions. You get lifetime access to the diagnostic database.

That makes this a bit of an unmissable find, and definitely worth £9.99 if you can catch the deal.

With a bit of luck, you might never need to use it. But if you ever do see that check engine light pop up, you'll be glad you bought it.
