Govee’s Floor Lamp 2 is a striking, app-controlled RGB floor lamp that blends colourful effects with warm white lighting, making it a great entry point into atmospheric smart lighting at home
One of the burgeoning tech trends that doesn't get talked about enough is RGB lighting. Thanks to the capabilities of modern LEDs, colourful lighting is creeping into homes everywhere. We put it behind our TVs, beneath our cabinets, on our walls, and in our PC cases.
It's a trend that's propelled by the Instagram set, who love their colourful backdrops and mellow lighting, but it can be a pricey look to set up in a room.
LED strips are a good start, but there are a range of technologies to look for. If you really want to set the mood, though, a good floor lamp is a must. And I've been testing one of the best ones in the market, in my own home.

It's Govee's new Floor Lamp 2. Govee is a market leader in this tech, and this new device doesn't look like any other floor lamp you've seen before.
It has a base the size of a flower pot, and then a huge pole sticking out of the top. The base has a lighting unit built in, and the pole has a strip all of its own.
The effect is quite lovely, especially once you play with the colours. While it can just be set to a bright, white light,
Govee has added a technology called RGBICWW. To break that down, it's an RGB (Red, Green, and Blue) system, with IC: Independent Control, and Warm White lighting. And it's that Warm White light - from dedicated white LEDs - that many of the cheaper systems don't have.

The Independent Control is the fun bit though. Using Govee's excellent app, you can set up a vast array of colour combinations and sequences, and even set the lighting to react to the music playing in the background.
It means you can adjust the colours to suit a mood, to follow the theme of a party, or just add a bit of mellow atmosphere. Or, if you want, it's just a calming floor lamp.
The Floor Lamp 2 has Matter support, which is becoming increasingly useful, as it allows you to link the lamp up to all sorts of smart home systems, and it makes automations really easy. For example, you could link it up to a motion sensor so it comes on when you walk into a room, or you could set it to come on just before the sun sets.
If you don't want to muck about with apps and smart speakers, there's a physical remote control that sticks to the lamp, and this works really well for quick controls.

It might not look it, but the Floor Lamp 2 is really sturdy. The only gripe is it's a bit of a fiddle to set it up, because it comes in pieces. Once it's done, it's done, but it does take some patience.
If you want a really bright floor lamp that will fill a room to help you with delicate tasks, this isn't it. It's not bright enough.
But if you want to light up a reading corner, and have a source of mood lighting, or start a collection of RGB lights to add atmosphere to a room, it's absolutely brilliant. Just be warned, once you've bought one, you might want more. It's quite an addictive little trend. Currently £149 from Currys.
