Amazon is apparently removing support for older Kindle devices - which means users will no longer be able to buy new books on them - but new devices are on sale for the next few hours.
If you’ve been using your Kindle for more years that you can remember, there’s a chance that it may stop working as you’d like it too soon.
That’s because Amazon has apparently decided to withdraw support from models released in, or before, 2012. This means that people who own these devices will no longer be able to buy new books to read of them - or borrow books from any other user.
The change is said to be coming in soon too - May 20, to be precise. According to Reddit user Amorisaiya, they have received an email from Amazon advising them that Kindle and Kindle Fire devices "from 2012 and earlier" will no longer be supported from this date. Others still using these older models, however, have commented to say that they have not received such an email.
The email allegedly goes on to confirm that while owners of these older Kindles will still be able to use them to read books they have already downloaded on the device after this date and access their accounts, they will no longer "be able to purchase, borrow or download additional books on them after that date".
The full list of Kindles which will be affected by this are:
- Kindle 1st generation from 2007
- Kindle 2nd generation released in 2009
- Kindle DX from 2010
- Kindle DX Graphite also released in 2010
- Kindle Keyboard also from 2010
- Kindle 4 launched in 2011
- Kindle Touch also released in 2011
- Kindle Fire 1st generation from 2011
- Kindle 5 released in 2012
- Kindle Paperwhite 1st generation also launched in 2012
- Kindle Fire 2nd generation from 2012
- Kindle Fire HD 7 tablet also released in 2012
- Kindle Fire HD 8.9 from 2012
If you own any of these devices, you are seemingly left with two choices: Go on an intense book buying spree in the next few weeks and cross your fingers that you’ve bought enough - but no matter what you will eventually run out. Or, upgrade to a newer Kindle model.
The good news is that now is a great time to get a new Kindle because several of them are on sale on Amazon right now - but only for a very limited time.
Here’s what you can buy and the discounts to be had - as long as you buy before 9am tomorrow morning, (Thursday April 9), because that’s when the sale ends.
