York City fans cycle for British Heart Foundation in memory of Northampton Town supporter

The supporters will be travelling from their ground, Bootham Crescent, in support of the British Heart Foundation. Mr Henderson died after suffering a heart attack outside Sixfields Stadium in January 2014 after the game against York City.

The bike ride was the idea of a visiting York City fan, Ian Jones, after he witnessed the tragic event, which happened in the presence of David’s nine-year-old son.

Last year the lads raised over seven thousand pounds and aim to beat that amount this year, especially as, after the success of last year, several more keen cyclists have come forward to join in the 200 mile fundraiser.

Ian had also arranged a bucket collection on Boxing Day at the York v Northampton game, however, the game was postponed after the Bootham Crescent pitch was waterlogged as a result of the serious floods in York. This will now go ahead at the rescheduled game later in February.

The lads will set off February 4, arriving in time for kickoff on Saturday, two days later.

Ian admits to learning things the hard way by doing very little in the way of training last year so this year he has been training hard and encouraging the others to do the same.

David Henderson was a well-loved figure, especially amongst the Stoke Bruerne community where he managed the Canal Museum, and he played an important role in promoting leisure and tourism in Northamptonshire. He was a enthusiastic Cobblers’ fan and he and his son were season ticket holders.
