Tributes for popular pub regular believed murdered during a night out in Northampton

Paul Smith died on Sunday from the injuries he sustained during an incident at the Edge of Town pub in Regent Square more than two months ago.

Since then, tributes have since poured in for the 49-year-old many knew as “Smithy.”

The Edge of Town pub closed on Monday out of respect for its former regular, who would often frequent the premises with his father Alec.

Landlord Martyn Edwards said he and the regulars were devastated by the loss and has placed a makeshift shrine on the bar for people to pay their respects.

He said; “I used to know him and his dad well, they were good buddies of mine.

“He was such a jokey person, him and his dad were like a pair of comedians.

“He was a very popular bloke in the community.

“We are so sad to see him gone.”

Mr Edwards said many in the pub knew Mr Smith from his school days. It is believed he went to Duston Upper School.

The landlord lit a candle the day Mr Smith died, which he say he will keep lit until the family hold his funeral.

Adam Morin, said: “Paul you were a true gentle guy, never had a bad word to say about anyone. Whatever life threw at you, you always had a smile on your face, and a joke to tell. You will be missed by so many and I was privileged to have known you and called you my friend.”

James Morgan, wrote: “R.I.P Paul Smith such a great man taken too soon. Sleep tight buddy.”

Courtney John Flannigan, was due to appear at Northampton Crown Court on Wednesday charged with the murder of Mr Smith.

The 21-year-old, of Pleydell Gardens, Far Cotton, will also face charges of attempted grievous bodily harm in relation to another man.
