About a mile-long stretch of the Weedon Road from the Sainsbury's roundabout in Sixfields to Franklin's Gardens has been plagued by traffic jams again today due to temporary traffic lights creating a one-way system.

The temporary four-way traffic lights, which have been there since yesterday (Monday), are positioned at the roundabout near to the Northampton Audi dealership and Wickes.

The company carrying out the gas works, Cadent, said it plans to be on the site until Friday (March 5). Before the company started the works, it said that delays would be "unlikely".

The traffic in the area was just as bad yesterday at a range of different times throughout the day.

Northamptonshire County Council has also been contacted for further information about the effects of the 24-hour bus lane and its potential contribution towards the traffic.

The 24-hour bus lane was put in place to encourage cycling and greener ways to travel and in turn reduce the amount of motorists on the roads.

A Cadent spokesperson said: “Cadent are currently carrying out essential maintenance work. We know this may cause disruption, but we hope people understand this is essential work to keep the gas flowing safely and reliably to the area.

“We have planned this work closely with Northamptonshire County Council and the temporary traffic arrangements are necessary to ensure the safety of our teams on site and the safety of motorists as they navigate around our work area.”
