Truckers came to the rescue of a red-faced fellow driver who blocked the A5 in Northamptonshire trying to do a U-turn last night.

Northamptonshire Police held up traffic for around an hour after the HGV got stuck between Old Stratford and the A43 at Towcester.

A spokesman for Highways England said: "Traffic was temporarily stopped due to a stranded heavy goods vehicle attempting a U-turn on the single carriageway at 11.35pm.

Stranded truckers turned out in force in an effort to get the vehicle moving again

"The carriageway was blocked in both directions between the A508 and the A43 while the HGV was recovered. The road was fully reopened at 12.30am."

Diversions increased overnight on the A508 which was already busy with M1 traffic forced off the motorway by an overnight closure between junction 14 and junction 15 as part of the smart motorway upgrade work.
