From Monday (June 15), it became essential for anyone using public transport to wear a face mask or a face covering.

The new Government guidelines were introduced in a bid to help stop the spread of the pandemic as the country gets back to work and businesses reopen.

However, since the beginning of the week a number of Northamptonshire Stagecoach bus users have queried why drivers are not wearing masks.

Some are also unsure as to why passengers without a mask were not queried and others had concerns about the social distancing onboard.

Stagecoach has now issued a statement to clear up any confusion surrounding the new rules.

In response to the concerns about drivers not wearing masks, a spokesman for the company explained about the use of protective screens.

Chris Child, marketing manager, said: “Our drivers already have a protective screen that provides a safe barrier. As a result, the government advice is that face coverings are not necessary for bus drivers.

“However, should the driver need to leave their cab to assist a customer, they will wear a face covering.”

The statement also explained that some passengers are exempt from wearing face coverings.

Chris continued: "The government has now published a list of people who are exempt from wearing face coverings.

“Our free journey assistance card is available at stagecoachbus.com and customers can use this as an easy way of showing they are exempt from wearing a face covering.”

The company is also asking customers to take note of the guidance it has issued on its website and social media platforms.

Chris said: "Our experience is that the vast majority of passengers adapt very well and look to do the right thing.

“However, we know that it will take some time for passengers to adapt to this new requirement.

“As with any change in any part of life there may be instances where people forget or aren't aware and we are helping our passengers to understand the new guidance.

"We have detailed information on our buses and across our website and social media channels, and we will continue to remind people of the importance of following the new rules to help themselves and their fellow passengers.

"We will continue to work with our passengers to help them have all the information they need to plan their journeys."
