Highways England cameras showed tailbacks along an eight-mile southbound stretch back to Junction 17 for the M45.

One lane is already closed in the area for roadworks and heavy rain is adding to problems for drivers.

Drivers heading further south on the M1 face more delays with traffic slow and queuing near Junction 14 for Milton Keynes and at Junction 12 following a broken down vehicle on the exit slip road.

A Met Office weather warning for heavy rain in Northamptonshire is in force until 2pm on Wednesday and drivers are being warned to expected dangerous conditions and some surface water on the roads.
