Major roadworks set to hit Northampton streets in May with multiple closures planned
A series of road closures and traffic restrictions are set to affect motorists across Northampton and surrounding villages throughout May as West Northamptonshire Council rolls out a programme of maintenance and improvement works.
Several key routes in Northampton will be impacted, with works ranging from carriageway repairs to communications upgrades and safety improvements.
Among the most significant town centre disruptions, parts of Church Lane and Sheep Street will face restrictions between May 5 and May 29, 2026. The works will include the construction of a new tactile crossing, carriageway widening and the introduction of a mandatory contraflow cycleway. Temporary changes to one-way systems and diversions via Lady’s Lane, Upper Mounts and surrounding roads will be in place.
Elsewhere in Northampton, Margaret Street will be closed from Robert Street to Charles Street for three days starting May 13, 2026, to allow for communications pipe works. Kenmuir Avenue, Reynard Way, St Johns Avenue, Kingsland Avenue and Purser Road are also scheduled for one-day closures between May 11 and May 15, 2026, primarily for carriageway repairs.

On Lodge Way, a closure is planned on April 26, 2026, for crane operations, while Clarence Avenue, Swale Drive and Little Billing Way will also see short-term closures between April 29 and May 1, 2026.
Outside the town, a number of rural routes will be affected. Welford Road in Spratton is due to close for one day from May 11, 2026, for water meter works, while Gynwell in Naseby will shut on May 13, 2026, for similar works.
Foxhill Road between Long Buckby and West Haddon is expected to be closed for two days from May 14, 2026, for water main works, with diversions in place via the A428 and surrounding routes.
In Wootton, Newport Pagnell Road will be closed until June 19, 2026, to allow repairs following a sinkhole, with a diversion via the A45 and A428.
Other closures include Ashton Road in Roade, Manor Road and Haynes Lane in Spratton, and Station Road and Brixworth Road between Cottesbrooke and Creaton, all scheduled for short durations to carry out essential repairs or utility works.
A temporary 30mph speed limit will also be introduced on Northampton Road in Cosgrove from May 11, 2026, for one day during carriageway repairs.
Most of the restrictions are expected to last between one and three days, although legal orders allow them to remain in place for up to 18 months if required.
Motorists are advised to follow signed diversion routes and allow extra time for journeys while the works are carried out.
