Five Northampton roads face closures and new restrictions from this week

A series of road closures and traffic restrictions are set to come into force across Northampton, including measures for Saints home games and work which will see speed humps and traffic islands removed.

West Northamptonshire Council has published several traffic orders covering roads across the town, with the first taking effect on Friday, September 18.

Edgar Mobbs Way will become temporarily one-way, with westbound traffic permitted only, between the entrance to the Claret Car Park and Walter Tull Way.

The restriction is being introduced for the safety of supporters leaving Saints and Lightning home games and is expected to operate for two hours during home fixtures throughout the 2026/27 season.

Drivers will be diverted via Harvey Reeves Road, St James Mill Road, St James Road, Weedon Road and Upton Way. The reference is 26/27 – W722, PKG/T26/739.

Three further Northampton roads are affected from Monday, September 21.

The entire length of Obelisk Rise is expected to close for one day for carriageway repairs, with traffic diverted via Reynard Way and Holly Lodge Drive. The reference is 26/27 – W662, PKG/T26/736.

Caswell Road will also be restricted for one day between the Gowerton Road roundabout and Salthouse Road.

The work will involve removing 10 flat-top speed humps, kinks and traffic islands from the carriageway, installing double-height concrete kerbing, widening the footway and installing a parallel pedestrian and cycle crossing east of Sketty Close.

The alternative route is via Salthouse Road and Gowerton Road. The reference is 26/27 – W665, PKG/T26/737.

Bants Lane, Northampton, is then due to be restricted for one night from Tuesday, September 22, for repairs to a manhole outside number 110.

The diversion will use Harlestone Road, Spencer Bridge Road, Weedon Road and Duston Road. The reference is 26/27 – W382, PKG/T26/741.

Meanwhile, the council is proposing new double yellow lines at the junction of Windingbrook Lane and Watermill Way in Collingtree.

The authority says the no-waiting-at-any-time restriction is intended to improve road safety, tackle inappropriate and obstructive parking and help traffic move safely. Representations must be received by October 1, quoting P2139.
