Drivers warned of widespread Northampton road closures starting in early January
Drivers in Northampton are being warned to plan ahead as a series of road closures and traffic restrictions are set to come into force from early January as part of essential gas, telecom and carriageway works.
Among the most significant closures is Park Avenue South, which will shut between Abington Park Crescent and Billing Road from January 5, 2026, as gas main replacement works take place. The closure is expected to remain in place until January 25, 2026, with a signed diversion route in place via Rushmere Road, Bedford Road, Cliftonville Road, Alfred Street, St Edmunds Street and Wellingborough Road.
At the same time, Landcross Drive will be closed for 50 metres from Abington Park Crescent, with works expected to run from January 26 until February 11, 2026. Drivers will be diverted via Billing Road East, Park Avenue South and Abington Park Crescent.
In the town centre, Angel Street will be closed to traffic, pedestrians and equestrians between Guildhall Road and Fetter Street from January 5, due to overhead telecom works. The restriction is expected to be lifted by January 7, 2026, with a diversion in place via Guildhall Road, St John Street and Fetter Street.

Several other Northampton roads are also scheduled for temporary closures as part of carriageway repair works. Lorne Road, between Barrack Road and Louise Road, will close for one day from January 6, while Edgemont Road, between Lumbertubs Way and Seedfield Close, is expected to close for two days from January 8. Valley Road, near Washbrook Close, will be closed for around two days from January 12, with Collingwood Road, between Ashburnham Road and Birchwood Road, closing for one day from the same date.
Motorists are also being advised of a temporary one-way system in Bedford Road, where the eastbound carriageway between Cheyne Walk and Becketts Way will be closed on January 12 for one day to allow for carriageway repairs.
Further closures in Northampton include Fairfield Road, between Wallace Road and Malcolm Road, which will shut for one day from January 14.
In addition to the Northampton works, a number of nearby villages will also see temporary restrictions. These include Church Street in Boughton, Haynes Lane in Spratton, Spratton Road in Long Buckby, Banbury Lane in Fosters Booth, and Harborough Road in Brixworth, all to allow for a range of water, telecom and highway repair works. Longer-running schemes include major main replacement works on High Street and Buckingham Road in Whittlebury, with the first phases expected to remain in place until March 28, 2026.
West Northamptonshire Council said all closures will only be enforced when signed on site and urged motorists to follow diversion routes and allow extra time for journeys during the works.
