Drivers warned as key routes across Northampton shut for essential upgrades in early 2026

Motorists in Northampton are being warned to expect disruption from early January as a series of major road closures and restrictions are set to come into force across the town.

West Northamptonshire Council has confirmed that Park Avenue South, Angel Street, Lorne Road, Edgemont Road, Valley Road, Collingwood Road, Bedford Road, Fairfield Road, Greville Avenue, Wallace Road and Kenmuir Crescent will all be affected by works ranging from gas main replacements to telecom and carriageway repairs.

The largest impact is expected around Abington, where Park Avenue South will be shut from Abington Park Crescent to Billing Road from January 5, 2026, with works expected to run until January 25, 2026. Gas main replacement works mean Landcross Drive will also be affected from January 26 to February 11, 2026. Diversions will send drivers via Rushmere Road, Bedford Road, Cliftonville Road and Wellingborough Road.

In the town centre, Angel Street will be completely closed - including to pedestrians - from January 5 to January 7, 2026. Overhead telecom work means all traffic will be diverted via Guildhall Road, St John Street and Fetter Street.

Greville Avenue, Wallace Road and Kenmuir Crescent all have short-duration closures between December 8 and December 11, 2025, as previously confirmed by the council.
