Disruption ahead on Northampton streets with multiple temporary road closures planned
Drivers and residents in Northampton are being warned of a series of temporary road closures starting later this month and into February as West Northamptonshire Council carries out repair, demolition and utility works across the town.
Among the busiest routes affected is Billing Brook Road, which will be closed between Standens Barn and Spanslade Road on February 6, 2026, for one day while carriageway repairs are carried out. A signed diversion will be in place via Wellingborough Road, Great Billing Way, Fishponds Road, Station Road and High Street.
Further disruption is expected on Hunsbury Hill Road, which will shut between the Dayrell Road roundabout and the entrance to the shops on February 9, 2026, also for one day, again for carriageway repairs. Drivers will be diverted via Hunslet Lane, Ladybridge Drive and Danes Camp Way.
In the Abington area, Cliftonville will be closed to all traffic, including pedestrians and equestrians, from the entrance to Sunnyside south to the entrance to Spring Hill House from February 9, 2026, until February 13, 2026, while demolition and construction works take place. The diversion route will be via Billing Road and Cliftonville Road.

Nearby, Alcombe Road will be shut between Alcombe Terrace and Overstone Road on February 10, 2026, for one day for carriageway repairs, with traffic diverted along Grove Road, Cloutsham Road and Overstone Road.
In the east of the town, Blackthorn Road will close between Croftmeadow Court and Wysall Road on February 11, 2026, for one day, while Goldings Road will shut between Blackthorn Road and Shelford Close on February 23, 2026, also for one day. Both closures are for carriageway repairs. Diversions will be via Great Billing Way for Blackthorn Road and Lings Way, Talavera Way, Great Billing Way and Blackthorn Road for Goldings Road.
Work is also continuing on Grove Road, which is already closed between Clare Street and Somerset Street from January 23, 2026, for one day for carriageway repairs, with a diversion via Cloutsham Street, Overstone Road and Clare Street.
Elsewhere in Northampton, Manor Road will close between Knights Lane and Welford Road from January 27, 2026, for up to three days for water main works, while Portland Place will be shut between numbers 6 and 8 from January 29, 2026, until February 3, 2026, for pole replacement works. No diversion is available for Portland Place, although access will be maintained where possible.
Outside the town, a number of roads across West Northamptonshire will also be affected, including Willow Lane in Great Houghton, Deanshanger Road in Potterspury, Lumber Lane in Paulerspury and Gayton Road in Bugbrooke, the latter expected to remain restricted for up to six months due to bridge surveys and clearance works.
All of the closures are being made under Section 14 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. Although each order can remain in force for up to 18 months, the council says the restrictions will only apply when works are taking place and signs are displayed.
