Rail passengers heading to and from Northampton are being warned to check their journeys before travelling following a train derailment in Coventry in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Operator London Northwestern Railway is advising passengers planning to catch a train to or from Northampton or Long Buckby not to travel before midday as cancellations are likely but warns says disruption could last all day.

Passengers are advised to avoid travel before noon and to check for the latest information at the National Rail website.

A spokesman for LNR said "A derailment within the depot near Coventry is resulting in disruption to trains at the station.

"Trains may be delayed by up to 30 minutes, cancelled or diverted until approximately 12noon.

"We have arranged rail replacement transport where possible and ticket acceptance with other train operators.

"We will do all we can to keep people moving but we have limited capacity and there will be disruption.

"Anyone whose journey is delayed by 15 minutes can claim compensation via our Delay Repay scheme — there are details on our website.
