The 0804 and 0824 services both left Northampton on time but were stuck behind the stalled freight train.

The 0804 service to London Euston eventually reached Milton Keynes at 9.03am — more than 40 minutes behind schedule.

A spokesman for the operator warned: "This disruption is expected to last until around 09:45 today and some of our services may be delayed or cancelled at short notice as a result.

"To see how this might affect you, please use the Live Departures & Arrivals or plan your journey using the National Rail Enquiries real-time journey planner.

"Also, you can claim compensation for any delays to your journey using our delay-repay scheme online."
