The A45 is also struggling eastbound heading towards Thrapston according to traffic agencies with more delays reported on the A509 between Kettering and Wellingborough, and the A508 between Brixworth and Northampton.

Gritters have been out all night keeping attempting to keep main routes clear but many country roads remains extremely treacherous.

Superintendent Elliot Foskett of Northamptonshire Police warned: "It is pretty bad out there.

"Main concern is that road you expect to be clear has still got ice on them so you can imagine what the village roads are like, and we don't want to put any pressure on the NHS getting yourself in an accident and needing an ambulance to take you to hospital.

"If you do need to make that essential journey today, please take extra care on the roads. Even once the snow starts to melt, it will leave lots of standing water. "
