Storm Doris nearly rips off piece of glass roof at Northampton homeless shelter

Firefighters from Moulton are currently stationed outside the Hope Centre in Bailiff Street after reports a glass vent had become unsafe in the high winds.

The news comes as Storm Doris tears through the county, bringing winds of up to 60mph in places.

Watch manager Aidan Phillips, who is in charge of the scene at the Hope Centre said: "There is an unsafe piece of glass on the top of the roof that is covering an air vent.The vent opens when there is a fire alarm and acts as a smoke vent.

"What has happened is, the fire alarm has gone off and the wind has got under it and tore it off.

"We are concerned because we don't want it to come off and hurt someone."

Mr Phillips has asked people walking past the scene to heed the cordon around the Hope Centre and allow the crew to carry out their work.

However, he said the operation is being hampered as the aerial ladder unit cannot be used in high winds.

Bailiff Street will remain closed in the meantime.
