Northamptonshire South MP Andrea Leadsom has emerged as one of the frontrunners to be the next Prime Minister after David Cameron's resignation this morning.

The energy minister and has been a prominent Leave campaigner in the run up to the EU referendum.

This morning she tweeted her pleasure at the country voting for Brexit.

“Huge congratulations on our Independence Day,” she said. “A superb result for the UK.”

But now following high-profile performances during the ITV and BBC live debates, Mrs Leadsom has emerged as a favourite to take over the premiership of the country.

Bookmakers Ladbrokes and William Hill have Mrs Leadsom as a 10-1 shot for to be the next Conservative leader.

Overall, bookies have her in fourth behind favourite Boris Johnson, Home Secretary Theresa May and former education secretary Michael Gove.

Mrs Leadsom is yet to make a statement this morning.
