Should Trump visit be cancelled? Northampton MPs have their say

Donald Trump's "mistakes" should not get in the way of the relationship between the UK and US, a Northampton MP has said.

Andrew Lewer, Conservative MP for Northampton South, says he would be "amazed" if President Trump visited the UK at this point after the leader of the United States retweeted three unverified videos that had been posted by Jayda Fransen of Britain First.

Earlier today, PM Theresa May condemned the President's actions and said he was "wrong" to retweet the far-right posts.

But Trump replied to the PM's statements with another tweet claiming there was "destructive Radical Islamic Terrorism" in the UK.

The Government has so far resisted calls to rescind their offer of a state visit.

Mr Lewer said: "I think that they were incredibly unwise messages for anyone in public life to send let alone the President of the United States.

"I share with the Prime Minister's and especially Sajid Javid's dismay and I think it's unfortunate that he's now compounded these mistakes by making vociferous messages to anyone who speaks against him.

"I would not support a state visit by Trump at this point. We have to bear in mind that the relationship between the US and the UK is more important than the mistakes of one man but I would be amazed if such a visit were to take place now."

Deputy leader of the Commons and MP for Northampton North Michael Ellis has been contacted for comment.
