Sex offender from Northampton who exposed himself to pensioner has jail sentence reduced

Mark William Brown, of Lower Meadow Court, Northampton was given a chance to turn his life around after he twice drunkenly visited a pensioner and exposed himself to her in 2013.

The 52-year-old, who has a previous history of sex offending, was spared jail at that point, instead being given treatment to address his alcohol problem.

He was also given a strict ban from going to certain places, including schools, parks and swimming pools, and was told that being drunk in public could land him behind bars.

However, he later told his probation worker he had been to a fun fair twice.

He was also spotted by another probation officer, as he staggered along the street drunk in October last year.

As a result of his misdemeanours, he was re-sentenced for his original crimes against the elderly woman.

A judge at Northampton Crown Court branded him “dangerous” and handed him an eight-year extended sentence for public protection - made up of a four-year jail term and four years on extended licence.

But that has now been overturned by judges sitting at the Appeal Court, in London, who said he does not pose a risk to society.

Lord Justice McCombe told the court: “There is no doubt he is a serious menace, but we do not think he satisfies the criteria for the imposition of an extended sentence.”

The judge, sitting with Mr Justice Jeremy Baker and Sir Alistair MacDuff, said a four-year determinate sentence was the appropriate punishment.
