Security threat that sparked safety alert at Northampton Saints match believed to be a hoax

The threat was believed to be a hoax but given the nature of the message that was received Saints needed to treat it seriously

Sunday’s ‘security incident’ during Saints’ Investec Champions Cup game against Cardiff Rugby was likely to be a hoax, the Chron understands.

After Saints beat Cardiff Rugby 28-12 at DPD Stadium at Franklin’s Gardens, players left the field immediately, and the departure of supporters from the stadium was ‘carefully monitored’.

It is understood Saints received a threat relating to the stadium via social media, prompting Northamptonshire Police to investigate.

The threat was believed to be a hoax but given the nature of the message that was received Saints needed to treat it seriously and prioritise public safety, ensuring supporters did not congregate in the stadium after the match had ended.

In consultation with the police, a series of precautionary measures were taken designed to ensure the safe and orderly departure of supporters from the stadium, while avoiding any unnecessary alarm.

Crowd movement and the exit of supporters from the venue were closely monitored throughout.

Saints released a statement on Sunday evening, which read: “Northampton Saints can confirm that there was a security incident during the second half of this evening’s match against Cardiff Rugby.

“As a precautionary measure, players from both teams left the field of play immediately following the final whistle.

“The departure of supporters from the stadium was carefully monitored, and the club continues to work closely with Northamptonshire Police.”

Cardiff Rugby posted on social media platform X: “Our sincerest apologies to travelling supporters, players and staff were moved down the tunnel as quickly as possible after the full-time whistle due to a safety issue.

“Thank you for your fantastic support throughout tonight's match, and we'll see you at the Arms Park next Friday.”
