Runaway dog released by high winds in Northampton killed by police

One of the dogs was deemed to be a threat to the public and was killed at the scene while the other was injured.

Police were called to Ingleborough Way, off Newton Road, Duston, today (February 23) after a member of the public reported that two Staffordshire-type pit-bull terriers were on the loose.

Lisa Warren, a resident from Newton Road, said: "I saw quite a few police officers outside my flat. They were armed. I asked them what was happening and they told me to stay inside as there were dangerous dogs on the loose."

Four people were bitten as the dogs ran rampant across the estate.

It is believed the animals escaped after high winds brought down a fence.

One of the people bitten was taken to Northampton General Hospital, but the injuries were not thought to have been serious.

An investigation has been opened to establish what happened, who owned the dogs and how they escaped.

Superintendent Dennis Murray, head of the force control room, said: “This was an isolated incident which was brought to a safe conclusion.

“Anybody who wishes to raise any concerns should contact police on 101.

“We are also appealing for anybody who witnessed the incident to contact us on 101 or by calling Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111. Always call 999 in an emergency.”

The injured dog is currently under the care of a vet.
