A railway worker died after being hit by a train in south of Northampton yesterday (Wednesday, April 8), it has been confirmed.

The man in his 50s died while working on the West Coast Mainline in Ashton, near Roade, at around 10.55am.

Police officers and investigators remain on the scene today to establish the full circumstances behind the incident, which blocked the railway for around an hour.

James Dean, Network Rail’s West Coast Mainline South route director, said: “It is with great sadness I can confirm that a railway employee died yesterday after being struck by a train.

“The tragedy took place just before 11am near Roade on a southbound line between Northampton and London Euston.

“Our thoughts and sympathies are with his family and loved ones at this time.

“We are assisting emergency services and safety examiners with their investigations into this incident.”

A British Transport Police spokesman : “British Transport Police were called at 10.53am on April 8, to an area of railway in Ashton following a report of a casualty on the tracks.

"Officers and paramedics attended, however, a person was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

"The deceased, a man in his 50s, was a railway employee and his family have since been informed.

“Officers remain at the scene today to establish the full circumstances behind the incident and are working alongside the Government’s Office of Rail and Road.

"The Rail Accident Investigation Branch have been notified and are attending the site to gather evidence.”
