Popular Northampton jewellers unveils its £210,000 make-over

A Northampton jewellers, which has been in business for almost 100 years, has today unveiled its costly refurbishment.

Michael Jones Jewellers of the Grosvenor centre opened its doors to the public after a £210,000 five-week revamp to the shop-floor.

85-year-old Michael Jones made a special appearance to cut the ribbon and told the Chronicle and Echo that the staff are the biggest asset to the company.

“Michael Jones Jewellers is owned by the people that work here, it’s a common ownership business.

“In 1970 the business was turned into a co-operative because we are very interested in how people in this business are treated.

“The store looks marvellous, it’s important to always be offering quality premises to the public.”

Mr Jones’ parents started a pawnbroking business in 1919 in Upper Mounts on the corner of Earl Street.

It was in 1964 when the Michael Jones brand was created “to aim for the top.”

Managing Director for Michael Jones Jewellers, William Craghill has worked for the company for 46 years and started as an apprentice when he was 16-years-old

He said: “We are very keen on taking on apprentices in the shop, both from school and university, we do a lot of in-house training.

“We’ve commenced two bursaries for two university students at Northampton University. It’s becoming more and more important in the town and we felt we want to support it.”
