Conservative councillor John Caswell, who has been one of the Duston ward members on the borough council since 2003, passed away recently after months of ill health.

Councillor Caswell served as the Mayor of Northampton for 2014-15 and had been a member of the Northampton South Conservative Association for more than 20 years.

Councillor Matt Golby, who also represented Duston on the borough council, was one of many to pay tribute to Councillor Caswell.

He told the Local Democracy Reporting Service: “It’s very sad. It was John that got me into all this and he will be remembered for what he has done and achieved in Duston.

“He was quite instrumental in getting the community centre at Pendle Road up and running for the parish council as well as St Luke’s Centre. They are two very good assets for the area and he did a lot around that. I noticed that the flags there were at half mast, which was very respectful.”

As well as being Mayor for the town, Councillor Caswell also had spells as deputy leader of Northampton Borough Council and as a cabinet member for regeneration.

Among others to pay tribute were Councillor James Hill, a cabinet member on the borough, who tweeted: “John has served the people of Northampton for a number of years and was a fantastic Mayor of the town.”

And Andrew Lewer, the Conservative MP for Northampton South, also tweeted: “Sad news that Duston’s Councillor John Caswell has passed away. Always enjoyed meeting him and learning from his experience.”

Councillor Caswell was still chairman of Duston Parish Council upon his death, a role he had carried out since 2017 having been a parish councillor for the last 17 years.

In a statement on its website, the parish council stated: “John was a passionate supporter of Duston. The parish council is grateful for John’s many years of selfless service to Northampton and the parish of Duston, and we send our condolences to his family and friends.”
