Tributes have been paid to former Northampton MP Brian Binley who has died aged 78.

Mr Binley won the Northampton South seat for the Conservatives in 2005 and spent ten years as one of the town's MPs.

Current Northampton South MP Andrew Lewer tweeted: I am deeply saddened. I have lost a dear friend. Brian was a tremendous politician and I will miss him. My sincere condolences to his sons Matt and James.

Another fellow Tory, Wellingborough MP Peter Bone, added: "This is such sad news. Brian was a wonderful man who always stuck to his beliefs.

"He was an outstanding politician. He will be sorely missed. Always kind and helpful to me. With Brian the mould was broken . RIP gentle soul."

Tom Pursglove, the member for Corby, said: "Such sad news to wake up to. Brian was one of the best — one of the good guys. Always in good humour and you knew where you stood.

"Northamptonshire politics won't be quite the same without him. He loved this place. My thoughts are with his whole family."

A statement from Northamptonshire Coservatives said: "We are deeply saddened at the passing of Brian Binley.

At this very sad and difficult time, our thoughts and prayers are with Brian's family. We will miss him greatly."

Mr Binley joined the Young Conservatives aged 17 and was County Councillor for Hackleton from 1997 before winning Northampton South in 2005, beating the sitting MP Tony Clarke by more than 4,000 votes in what had been seen as a crucial marginal seat.

He retained the season in the 2010 general election with an increased majority of 6,004.

He was also a huge Northampton Town fan, member of Northamptonshire County Cricket Club and keen golfer.

A Cobblers spokesman said: "We are deeply sorry to learn of Brian’s passing. Brian was a Cobblers fan of many years and was a regular at our games.

"Our sincerest condolences are extended to Brian’s family and friends."
