New strategy aims to reverse wildlife decline across West Northamptonshire

West Northamptonshire is to get its first Local Nature Recovery Strategy in a bid to reverse wildlife decline and restore habitats across the area.

West Northamptonshire Council’s Cabinet approved the strategy on Tuesday, September 15, with the authority saying the area is one of the most nature-depleted parts of England.

The plan identifies priorities and practical measures to help nature recover, focusing on farmland, woodland, grassland, freshwater and wetlands, and urban habitats.

Measures could include tree planting, wetland restoration and sustainable drainage, while the strategy aims to create more, bigger, better and better-connected habitats.

Councillor Nigel Stansfield, cabinet member for environment, recycling and waste, said: “Our aim is to safeguard nature for generations to come, and create cleaner, greener spaces that meet the needs of local communities.”

The strategy, developed with partners, farmers, local groups and residents, will be published on the council’s website later this month.
