Harry Dunn's family are working with the new shadow foreign secretary to call for a parliamentary inquiry into the Government's handling of the diplomatic immunity scandal.

The Northamptonshire teenager's parents, Charlotte Charles and Tim Dunn, told Lisa Nandy about their struggle for answers on a conference call on Friday (May 8).

Ms Nandy has raised the case 'with the highest diplomatic levels' and will be asking other MPs to support a parliamentary inquiry.

Harry's parents said: "Lisa was really lovely and amazing with us. She allowed us the space and time to tell her how we are feeling and how unfair it all is.

"To lose our son was bad enough but to be abandoned and mistreated the way we have been by the British Government, who were clearly trying to sweep us under the carpet, is inhumane.

"We will not let another family go through what we have been through.

"We could see in Lisa’s eyes how awful she felt about what has happened and feel uplifted that she will now take things forward on our and the nation’s behalf."

Harry, 19, died after his motorcycle was involved in a collision with Anne Sacoolas' Volvo, which she has admitted was on the wrong side of the road, near Croughton on August 27, 2019.

The American driver initially co-operated with police but then told officers she had diplomatic immunity before flying back to the United States a few weeks later.

She was charged with causing death by dangerous driving in December, but the American State Department rejected an extradition request.

Harry's family have been campaigning for Sacoolas to return and for an inquiry into the Government's handling of the affair after a series of revelations about her history and who knew what and when.

Following their Zoom call, Ms Nandy wrote in the Mail on Sunday: "On Friday, I glimpsed the pain of a family coming to terms with the absence of a son who was the beating heart of their family.

"While nothing can diminish the agony, their love and resilience left me determined to help. This is a battle that will never be theirs alone.

"Starting today we redouble our efforts for truth and for justice. Harry's life mattered and we will honour it."
