Detectives are hunting car thieves who attempted to torch a stolen BMW in Northampton on Sunday night.

Firefighters from The Mounts responded to a 999 call following reports of the vehicle on fire in Mill Lane, Kings Heath, at around 7.05pm.

They managed to contain damage to the vehicle to the driver's side dashboard and steering wheel.

Police have now established the blue BMW 7 series had been stolen from a driveway in nearby Glebeland Road sometime between 9pm on Saturday night (June 20) and 9.40am the following morning.

Firefighters at the scene reported the fire was believed to have been started through an open driver's window.
