Police and army called to Northampton playing fields after concerns 'device' found could be explosive

A suspect device was found by a member of the public in Northampton amid concerns it could be explosive.

Police and the armed forces were called to playing fields in Rushmere Road at around 3pm yesterday (November 15).

The road was closed and the fields were cordoned off for at least three hours, as a precaution, however the device turned out to be a replica mortar.

A spokeswoman for Northamptonshire Police said: "This happened yesterday (November 15) at about 3pm when police were called to Rushmere Road to reports that someone had found what they thought could be an explosive device.

"We deployed alongside the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) to assess the threat and close the roads and put a cordon around the area, as a precautionary measure.

"The device turned out not to be dangerous and was a replica mortar."
