Plans for new Nando's and Prezzo restaurants in Northampton back on the cards
A Northampton leisure park is set for a revamp as plans for two new restaurants look to be finally moving forwards, McDonald's bids for an upgrade and a bumpy Italian restaurant car park could be levelled.
Revised plans to build two new restaurants next to the Cineworld at Sixfields Leisure Park in Walter Tull Way have been submitted to Northampton Borough Council at the same time McDonald's has applied to upgrade its drive-thru and Bella Italia has lodged to flatten out its often puddle-riddled car park.
The long-awaited extra restaurants next to Cineworld were first announced by Legal and General back in 2012, but have since been put on hold due to issues over drainage and ground remediation on the lumpy land.
Pre-let agreements had been reached with chicken eatery Nando's and Italian restaurant Prezzo to move into the new buildings, which developers say will create 25 jobs between the two sites.
Legal and General has now submitted a final set of designs to the borough council, much smaller than the initial proposals, in a sign the owners are keen to progress the plans.
Councillor Jill Hope (Lib Dem, Sixfields) said she was glad to see the improvements progressing at last.
But she added: "The problem is we have that land a the side of Sixfields Stadium.
"It's great that they are spending money in the area, but there is this big open mess next to the stadium. It is time it was redeveloped."
The borough council took on the land in question when it assumed the debts of Northampton Town Football Club back in 2015.
The authority is currently attempting to sell the land, which will play host to the John Scarrett and Sons Funfair this weekend.
However there have been no major announcements.
The improvements at McDonald's will involve a new "totem" and signage outside the outlet as well as an improved drive-thru lane.
