A plan to repair and replace the light heads on more than 1,300 streetlights across Northampton has begun this week.

The works will involve the replacement of bulbs and lights with a low energy efficiency rating as well as repairing columns in poor condition.

During the next six months over 1,300 streetlights and columns will be replaced by Balfour Beatty Street Lighting with LED lights as part of the borough council's 2019/20 capital funding programme.

The council says switching to LED lights will save money and reduce the borough's CO2 emissions by 72,130kgs a year.

Councillor Phil Larratt, deputy leader of Northampton Borough Council, said: “Having made a commitment to doing everything we can to tackle the climate emergency and become carbon neutral as a town, looking at our street lights and making them as energy efficient as we can by converting them to the latest LEDs is an important step in achieving our objectives.

"As well as making them much more energy-efficient, this programme delivers important improvements in the condition and safety of street lighting in town."
