A new initiative has been launched to help people in Northamptonshire affected by the Windrush scandal.

In 2017, it emerged that thousands of people from the Caribbean and other Commonwealth countries who came to the UK in the 20th century were wrongly told they came to Britain illegally.

Because of the deep flaws in Britain's immigration set out in the 60s, 70s and 80s, thousands of Black Britons were wrongly detained, denied legal rights, and in extreme some cases deported.

Now, the Windrush Advice Project has been launched by Northamptonshire Rights and Equality Council to help people in the county who now want to sort out their nationality status and obtain proof that confirms they can stay in the UK.

Anyone who wants to seek advice and support to make an application under the government's Windrush Scheme, and obtain the required documentary proof of their status, can contact NREC by telephone on 01604-400808, or email [email protected] or text: 07393181482.

This project, which starts officially on June 1st, is financially supported by the Windrush Justice Fund and NREC is also working in partnership with Central and East Northamptonshire Citizens Advice.

The name ‘Windrush’ derives from the ‘HMT Empire Windrush’ ship which brought one of the first large groups of Caribbean people to the UK in 1948.
