Northampton Borough Council is inviting residents to nominate people of the past who have contributed to the town’s reputation and residents’ welfare to immortalise their names and achievements on blue plaques.

Four final nominees will be selected, and the famous oval plaques commemorating them will be installed on key buildings across the town.

Councillor Anna King, cabinet member for community engagement and safety, said: “Our aim is to recognise those unsung heroes who have contributed significantly to improving Northampton’s reputation nationwide.

“We hope the public will help us identify loved ones who were historically vital to local development so we can recognise them appropriately.”

Nominees must meet certain criteria, including:

* They must have been deceased for at least 15 years

* They must have a strong connection to Northampton

* They should have enhanced the town’s reputation to the wider community and made significant contributions to residents’ welfare.

Noted local historian and independent selection panel member, Mike Ingram, said: “This new blue plaque scheme celebrates the town’s amazing history and gives the people of Northampton the opportunity to have their say as to who should be remembered.

“The choice is yours, so please don’t waste this opportunity.”

Nominations can be submitted here and will be accepted until November 2.
