West Northamptonshire residents warned over dangers of illegal fireworks ahead of Bonfire Night and Diwali

Residents across West Northamptonshire are being warned against buying cheap and potentially dangerous fireworks from unlicensed sellers ahead of Bonfire Night and Diwali.

West Northamptonshire Council's Trading Standards team is urging people to avoid purchasing fireworks from vans, market stalls or social media, warning that illegal products could cause serious injuries.

All fireworks sold in the UK must carry a CE or UKCA safety mark, alongside English instructions and labelling.

Products without the required markings may not have undergone appropriate safety testing and could pose significant risks.

Fireworks intended for private displays can only be purchased by people aged 18 and over, while the most powerful Category F4 fireworks are restricted to professionals.

Councillor Andrew Last, the council's cabinet member for regulatory services, said: “Fireworks should be a source of enjoyment, not danger.

“Illegal or unsafe fireworks can cause serious injuries and put people, pets and property at risk.”

Trading Standards officers are carrying out checks to identify potentially dangerous products and illegal sellers.

Residents are reminded that setting off fireworks, including sparklers, in streets or public places is illegal.

Fireworks are generally prohibited between 11pm and 7am, although the deadline extends to midnight on Bonfire Night and 1am on Diwali, New Year's Eve and Chinese New Year.

Organised public displays are considered the safest option, while those holding private celebrations should follow the firework code.

Suspected illegal firework sales can be reported through the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 0808 223 1133.
