A charity that helps youngsters in Northamptonshire overcome social isolation is now supporting people of all ages who are struggling as a result of the coronavirus crisis.

Peak Empower is putting together 'wellness packs' for people and families who are struggling with the strict social distancing rules in place nationwide.

In the first fortnight of the programme, they have received more than 200 referrals, with recipients including vulnerable pensioners, those who are shielding, families affected by financial difficulty and key workers.

Volunteer chief executive Sapphire Tuckfield said: “We wanted to do something for the community at this challenging time and felt these packs, which can either provide vital groceries to those in need or put a smile on someone’s face when they are down, would be a great way to do that.

“The demand has been huge and we are receiving new referrals every hour.

"Getting the stock and creating the packs is hard work, but we are happy to take it on so we can help the community. We have had great feedback so far."

Northampton Community Foundation has provided funding for the project, while support has also come from Music Bugs Northampton, Starbucks, The Copper Kitchen, In Kind Direct, M&S, The Entertainer and Mrs Moffett’s Kitchen.

Sapphire said: “We have a great support network which we really appreciate and are keen to use local businesses where possible.

"If any businesses out there can help us with either funding or products – particularly non-perishable groceries, arts and craft goods, toys and toiletries – then please get in touch.”

Peak Empower was founded in July 2019 by Sapphire and friend Lucy O’Connor to improve the well-being, confidence and self-esteem of young people.

They provide recreational activities, increase the number and availability of inclusive clubs, decrease social isolation and reduce negative perceptions of disability, mental health needs and disengaged youngsters.

To make a referral, or businesses that would like to help this project in some way, email [email protected].

For referrals, the recipients’ name, some details as to why they have been referred, their address and any dietary requirements need to be included - Peak Empower will deliver the most appropriate wellness pack for their needs.

Peak Empower is also accepting donations for a new 'care for carers' fund, which will provide wellness packs for care home staff around the county.
