Engineers say they are on the way to solving the riddle of a mysterious stink in drains in parts of Northampton.

Residents called in the county's Fire & Rescue Services over a smell of fuel coming from drains and cellars over a number of days in the Queen's Park area of Northampton.

The fire service, in turn, called in Anglian Water who said their team had tracked the source of the problem.

A spokesman for the water company said: "Our engineers have identified a leak from a fuel tank at one of the properties in the area.

"We have put a bung in the connection to prevent any further discharge into the system and we are now contacting the landlord to complete an immediate repair.

"The odour should clear quickly through the system now that the discharge has been stopped."
